PROLOGUE

FAIR WARNING

I SHOULDN’T BE TELLING YOU THIS. I don’t want to put you in danger. But this confession is for the greater good.

For humanity’s sake, I must create a record of my story. Just in case it is … well … the beginning of the end.

Who am I? My name is Dr. Katheryn Newton. Call me Kate. I have a Ph.D. in Molecular & Cell Biology from U.C. Berkeley. I’ve spent most of my career conducting immunology research at the Rose Institute in Livermore, California. Recently, it’s been groundbreaking. We’ll talk a lot more about that later.

Why am I turning to you and other curious readers? To strangers? I’m doing so for the simple reason that it would be foolish of me to dump this burden onto the backs of my friends. They’d be too easy to identify—and eliminate. Much smarter to entrust my story to a broad self-selecting assortment of literate strangers.

Thank you for volunteering.

Before you proceed, however, in all good conscience I must advise you to reread Chapter 3 of the Book of Genesis. It succinctly describes an analogous situation. One where I am portrayed by a snake and you, my fellow traveler, end up naked and afraid. Go ahead. Pull out your Bible or hit up Google. My story will wait.

You’re still reading. Interesting. You’ve bravely accepted the burden of wisdom despite my warning. I’m not sure if that speaks highly of you, or the opposite, but I thank you regardless. For what it’s worth, I have no doubt that you will enjoy the ride. Forbidden fruit always tastes sweet.

What you’re about to read is a record of the events that took place in the summer of 2024, either as I remember them, or as they were relayed to me by others involved. I’ve changed all names to protect two things: the innocent and your innocence. It will be safer that way.
